MLB news roundup
Welcome to Thursday everyone! The weekend is within reach.
The A’s released a trio of injury updates yesterday evening, all pitcher-related:
A's injuries:
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) May 15, 2024
- Alex Wood is shut down from throwing for at least 10-14 days and will be reevaluated
- Osvaldo Bido is progressing from his blister and A's are looking at him as a rotation option
- Luis Medina will pitch for Triple-A Las Vegas and is eligible to return on May 27
It’s mostly good news here. The A’s haven’t had that in a while.
The fact that Alex Wood is being shut down isn’t a surprise in the slightest. He was officially placed on the IL yesterday with left rotator cuff tendinitis and is now down for at least the next two weeks. It’s probably going to be more like a month or more when we see the 33-year old take the mound again for the A’s.
Being placed on the IL was something that probably should have happened earlier. We heard after his most recent outing that Wood has been dealing with a cranky shoulder for a bit but kept pitching, pushing through for his team. A nice sentiment but probably not the best decision this early in the season. The club’s immediate starting pitching depth is really being tested and losing Wood, even with the middling results, will have repercussions for the rest of the pitching depth.
Now how about some positive news. Right-hander Osvaldo Bido is making progress in his return from a blister on his pitching hand. Bido had been quietly performing well down in Triple-A for the Aviators, earning a promotion to the big-league roster last week for a spot start against the Rangers. That start ended in the third inning as the blister issue began to fester. His start wasn’t going great in the first place but maybe the blister was something that affected him in his outing. It sounds like when he’s ready he’ll rejoin the rotation, at least on a temporary basis. Let’s hope his second start goes a bit more smoothly than his first one.
And finally, in the best bit of news right-hander Luis Medina is set to finally begin his rehab assignment. Medina was fighting to claim a starting rotation spot during spring when he sprained his right knee, sidelining him for the start of the season. Thankfully it wasn’t anything too serious like an elbow or shoulder problem. He’ll definitely need a couple starts down in Vegas before coming back up but the team could also activate him the day he’s eligible. With the state of the pitching that is a definite possibility.
Have a good Thursday everyone!
