FORREST CHOPPED DOWN BY CHAMPS

Reigning A Section champions Bury BC sent out an early season warning with a 13-5 victory over Forrest A in their first match of the season.

The scoreline was hard on a Forrest side who gave their opponents a difficult night.

The visitors took the first four games at Bolton Arena with Nicki McGrath and Oliver Gregory winning 21-16 and 21-10 against Forrest’s Paula Wright and Ron Welsh. Bury’s first couple, Liz Holt and Scott Webber, won 21-14 and 21-18 against teenager, Chris Mealor and Christine Seddon.

Forrest did not allow Bury to have it all their own way when third couple Carolyn Wood and Will Wiseman won both their games to 21-14 and 22-20.

Mealor, who played probably the best badminton of his career so far, and Seddon took the first of their games to 21-15 against McGrath and Gregory who retaliated by taking the second to 21-13 for Bury.

In the Ladies’ doubles Wright and Wood had two close games against Holt playing with Grace Krzempek, losing one 22-20 and taking the other 21-19.

Mealor and Wiseman took the first of their men’s game 21-14 and third man Clint Gibbs with Gregory took the final game of the night 21-16

Westhoughton A have made it very tight at the top of B Section with a 13-5 win at Forrest C’s Bolton Arena venue.

Forrest C’s top couple Judith Mealor and Tony Augustiniak set the host team off to a good start taking both their mixed games to 21-18 and 21-9 from Westhoughton’s Maria Oliver and James Lawson.

The next six games went the way of Westhoughton. Forrest’s third pair of Steve Irvine and Jenny Ball fought hard in their mixed but Westhoughton stopped their gallop by taking the games 21-19 and 21-17. Forrest’s second couple, Christine Travis and John Mealor then took their two mixed to 21-13.

Westhoughton showed no mercy in their ladies’ doubles games with third lady Ruth Atherton partnering Alison Muddiman taking both games to 21-16 and 21-9 before Atherton and Oliver took the second set of ladies’ games to 21-9 and 21-12.

The men’s doubles appeared to be going the way of the ladies, with Westhoughton’s David Urmston and Craig Harvey taking their games to 21-12 and 21-10.

Westhoughton had won the match after the first men’s games but, although Urmston and Lawson took the first game 21-14, Forrest’s Steve Irvine with John Mealor took the final game to 21-17.
