Jordan’s ranking drops in Global Innovation Index

AMMAN — Jordan has dropped to 82nd place in the Global Innovation Index, down by seven places from 2015, while regionally, the Kingdom took 9th place. 

Switzerland came first in the index, released last week by a team from Cornell University, the business school INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organisation.

Jordan ranked 34th globally for its regulatory environment, in the survey of 128 countries, and took 44th place for rule of law. 

The Kingdom was found to be weaker in human capital and research, ranking in 86th place, and for market sophistication, Jordan came in 115th place, according to the index. 

Meanwhile, Jordan ranked 79th for infrastructure. 

Regionally, the UAE came first, followed by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Lebanon. Jordan scored higher than Egypt, which ranked 107th globally.  

The ranking is based on 82 indicators across seven areas: institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs.

In the institutions sub index, Jordan came in the 63rd place globally.

The index “aims to capture the multi-dimensional facets of innovation and provide the tools that can assist in tailoring policies to promote long-term output growth, improved productivity, and job growth”, according to its website.
