Berlin (dpa) - Europe needs a change of course, even if Britain does choose to remain in the European Union, said German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on Tuesday in Berlin.Things can‘t just keep going as they have been, he said during an Economic Council meeting put on by Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. "Otherwise the people will say: You haven‘t understood a thing."Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, whose country holds the EU‘s rotating presidency, and Deutsche Bank co-chairman John Cryan were also in Berlin to discuss Thursday‘s referendum in Britain.Dijsselbloem echoed Schaeuble‘s call for change, saying that "we should build a better Europe," with Britain taking on a bigger role in steering the bloc‘s future if British voters do decide to stay."The days before and after the referendum will be a test of the capital markets," said Cryan, adding that Deutsche Bank had prepared for any market instability in the coming days no matter the outcome.US billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros wrote in The Guardian newspaper on Tuesday that British voters are "grossly underestimating" the costs of leaving and could face a Black Friday of financial turmoil if they left."Too many believe that a vote to leave the EU will have no effect on their personal financial position," the piece said.
