How to get wherever you’re going on New Year’s
With rides costing a whopping total of $0, buses and trains are likely to be crowded, especially down near the water around midnight when the city will be doing its usual New Year’s fireworks extravaganza.
No shutdowns or re-routes are planned, but officials will be keeping an eye on traffic in the area and will make adjustments as necessary.
Caltrain, the Peninsula’s train service, will be adding some extra trains as well with scheduled departures of 12:45 a.m., 1:15 a.m., 1:45 a.m. and 2:15 a.m., or whenever they fill up.
SamTrans and AC Transit will be running on normal schedules with notable exception: both transit agencies, as well as Caltrain, will be offering their services free of charge.
A Driving Under the Influence conviction can cost upwards of $12,000, all told, and that’s without considering the risk posed to yourself, your passengers and others on the road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Numerous law enforcement agencies are planning stepped-up enforcement and checkpoints over the holidays, so the best plan of action is to simply pocket your keys and find another way home.
If you do have your vehicle and you’ve had some drinks, AAA Northern California may have a solution for you through the group’s “Tipsy Tow” program.
Drivers, potential passengers, party hosts, bartenders, and restaurant managers can call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) for a free tow home of up to ten miles.
Just tell the AAA operator, ‘I need a Tipsy Tow,’ and a truck will be on its way, AAA said in a statement.
