SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Staff members at a Sioux City cemetery are working with high school students to bring more light, both literally and figuratively, on an area where 72 Civil War veterans are buried.
The idea for the project started over a year ago, when Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War state graves registration officer Roy Linn wrote a letter to city cemeteries supervisor Tim Tushla about a program to provide military gravestones for grave sites that are missing them.
Cemetery administrative assistant Sheri Ross said it's not certain why the soldiers' unmarked graves never received stones when they were buried.
