Student admits to scrawling racist graffiti at San Ramon school

A student at a public high school in San Ramon admitted to scrawling racist graffiti in a school bathroom that read “whites” above one toilet and “colored” above another, school officials said Wednesday. The graffiti was reported last week after administrators at California High School spotted a picture of the vandalism circulating on social media, said Elizabeth Graswich, a spokeswoman for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. In the Monday incident inside one of the school’s female restrooms, an unknown individual wrote a racial slur on the wall and indicated that people of a certain race were not allowed to use the bathroom. In the earlier incident inside the male restroom, Graswich said school officials found it “challenging to investigate” because the jarring message administrators saw on social media was erased from the walls before they could photograph the graffiti. Officials reported both incidents to the San Ramon Police Department, which is conducting an investigation with the school district, Graswich said. After admitting to writing “whites” and “colored” over the toilets in a California High School boys room, the student in question could face a range of consequences that administrators are “still figuring out,” Graswich said.
