The club said Wednesday that its initial September roster expansion will encompass six players.
Outfielder Mac Williamson and reliever Josh Osich will come off the disabled list.
Infielder Kelby Tomlinson will be promoted from Triple-A with left-handers Steve Okert, Matt Reynolds and Ty Blach, who will be looking to make his big-league debut.
All will be in uniform for Thursday’s series opener at Wrigley Field, with Matt Cain to follow Friday when eligible to come off the DL.
General manager Bobby Evans said the club was not going to move anyone off the 40-man roster.
Because the Giants have no other catchers on the 40-man, they will take the unusual step of not adding one.
The roster crunch also prevented the Giants from adding Nathan, who has pitched four shutout innings for Double-A Richmond, Va., since the Giants signed him to a minor-league deal.
The Giants have not announced who will start at Wrigley on Friday, although manager Bruce Bochy hinted before Wednesday‘s game that it could be Albert Suarez.
Santiago Casilla admitted he thought the Diamondbacks might send Jake Lamb to bat for Yasmany Tomas with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and the Giants leading 4-1.
Lamb had hit two homers in six at-bats against Casilla, including one in April that cost the Giants a game.
Arizona manager Chip Hale surprisingly stuck with Tomas, who struck out.
