Giants making push for Jay Bruce
On the eve of the trade deadline, the Giants were making a late and strong push for Reds outfielder Jay Bruce, major-league sources said.
Bruce is one of the biggest names on the trade market approaching Monday’s 1 p.m. deadline and would provide a huge boost to a Giants lineup that has struggled to drive in runs since the All-Star break.
Sunday, general manager Bobby Evans said the Giants “can’t be singular in our thoughts,” an indication he’s not focusing exclusively on relievers - especially now that there are fewer options on the market -- and is open to getting another hitter, perhaps another starting pitcher.
If the Giants consider parting with Panik or Duffy - no easy task considering their roles in the 2014 championship run and value as part of an all-homegrown infield - Nuñez could become an everyday infielder.
Sounds like he’d be a lot more open to San Francisco than Jonathan Lucroy was to Cleveland - the Brewers’ catcher who exercised his no-trade clause and rejected a move to the Indians.
Evans and Walt Jocketty, Cincinnati’s president of baseball operations, spoke during the Reds’ visit to San Francisco.
The sides made two trades last summer with the Giants adding pitcher Mike Leake and outfielder Marlon Byrd.
