BREAKING: Rep member from Lagos dies

– The legislator was reportedly at the plenary on Wednesday, July 20, but, according to sources, he slept and refused to wake up

Reports reaching NAIJ.com say Adewale Elijah Oluwatayo, the member representing Ifako-Ijaiye federal constituency at the House of Representatives, is dead.

A source from his constituency confirmed that the federal legislator had, indeed, passed on.

Though the website of the National Assembly gives his age as 46, it was learnt that he actually died at 65 having being born in 1951.

It was learnt that he had no obvious signs of illness and was at the plenary for Wednesday, July 20.

According to sources, after the day’s plenary, the legislator also attended a caucus meeting at the House late Wednesday.

Some said the former special adviser on education to former Lagos state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, slept in his Abuja residence and refused to wake up while others said he actually slumped early Thursday, July 21.

Attempts to reach his close aides were not successful but a top politician from the constituency who said he was not in the country currently, added that he got the news and that he was awaiting further developments on the incident.

The late Adewale Elijah Oluwatayo attended the Ilesha Grammar School where he obtained his West Africa School Certificate in 1968.

He bagged a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1979 and got a Masters certificate from the Lagos state university in 2005.

He was chairman of Ifako/Ijaiye local government from 2004 to 2007 before serving as special adviser to Fashola, now a minister.

A former police officer and lecturer, he was considered a kingmaker in Ifako/Ijaiye and a grassroots politician. This was before he moved to Abuja as a representative.

In one of his interview after he won the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the House of Representatives, he said he would maintain his office in two ways.

“One is maintenance of the electorate.

“There is abject poverty in this land. I will first get low finance vocations for the people like soap making, tie and dye.

“I will establish them here. People are poor because they don’t have anything doing, the best is to establish them, empower them. I have done it before and will still do it and will continue.

“If I get to the House of Representatives, I will have financial power to do more. I will concentrate also on what Fayose called stomach infrastructure.

“There are special needs for education development here. I know the presence of the federal government is not felt here at all.

“I have it in mind and I have already written my own bill that will attract a federal government college to Ifako/Ijaiye and I have already done my own research where it will be sited.

“There is need for a public electronic library in Ifako/Ijaiye and by the grace of God, even if I could not get that through the federal government, I will take it through constituency project in Ifako/Ijaiye,” he promised in the interview.
