Edwards wins pole at Sonoma; Allmendinger is 2nd
Carl Edwards won his 19th career pole Saturday, and on Sunday he’ll shoot for his second win in three years in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.
Edwards, who posted a speed of 95.777 mph, will be joined in the front row by Los Gatos native AJ Allmendinger (95.676), last year’s pole sitter.
The 12 cars that posted the fastest single lap in the first 25-minute round advanced to the second, and the fastest driver in the 10-minutes second round won the pole.
[...] even having the fastest overall lap in the first round - as Kyle Larson did last year with a qualifying record 96.568 mph - isn’t enough to get the pole.
The pole sitter, it should be pointed out, hasn’t won this race in 12 years.
