Mike Montgomery to coach Pac-12 All-Star team in Australia
Former Stanford and Cal head coach Mike Montgomery has been selected to coach a Pac-12 All-Star team that will travel to Australia for a series of cultural experiences and exhibition games.
The squad features 12 athletes from 10 Pac-12 schools, including Stanford forward Dorian Pickens and Cal guard Stephen Domingo.
Montgomery’s squad will play a team from the semi-professional South East Australian Basketball League on July 10 before facing the Australian national team on July 12 and July 14.
The six-day tour will include chances for athletes to visit historic landmarks and experience the culture of Australia’s second biggest city.
“This tour of Australia marks an important step forward in the Pac-12’s mission to use the power of sport to advance our schools’ reach around the world, and to give our student-athletes opportunities to learn about a new culture while playing a sport they love” Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said in a news release.
For Stanford this past season, Pickens finished with the largest increase among returning players in the Pac-12 in points per game (plus-10.3) from freshman (2.0) to sophomore campaign (12.3).
