Mark Canha needs surgery; A’s call up Jesse Hahn, Max Muncy
Outfielder-first baseman Mark Canha will have season-ending surgery next Tuesday in Vail, Colo., where hip specialist Dr. Marc Philippon will remove excess bone growth at the top of Canha’s left femur.
Canha also had considered getting a cortisone shot to see if that might allow him to play this season, but he said a cortisone injection comes with some risks and, knowing how much trouble the hip had been giving him dating back to last year with no improvement, he decided surgery was the best course of action.
A’s left-handers Eric Surkamp and Sean Manaea also have had hip surgeries and recovered fully with no lingering issues.
Right-hander Henderson Alvarez was sent for an MRI on Tuesday; the initial thought was that he has a bit of a shoulder strain.
Phegley received a cortisone shot on Thursday and has had improvement, but not enough so to avoid going on the DL; in addition, he hasn’t played since May 9, and, Phegley said, it would be good to get some at-bats in a rehab game or two before returning.
