“All I can say now is that Nigerians are suffering. The suffering is too much.”

Ebenezer Babatope, a former minister of aviation and transport, has raised his voice against the removal of subsidy on petrol and the fuel price increase.

Stressing that the sharp increase in the fuel price has made life of Nigerians more difficult, Babatope called on President Muhammadu Buhari to act fast and put a smile on the face of the ordinary man.

Today.ng reports made the call on Monday, May 16, in a chat with journalists.

The ex-minister, who noted that the harsh economic situation in the country is having a terrible effect on him, warned the president that Nigerians may soon rise against one another because of hunger.

“On the fuel price increase, right now, I am still reading through what is happening and comparing it with what happened during our (PDP) own time. Basically, we have taken the decision before during our time when every Nigerian rose against us. That notwithstanding, good reasoning prevailed and we had a solution.

“All I can say now is that Nigerians are suffering. The suffering is too much. It is having a terrible effect on many of us, particularly on me. The hunger in town is unquantifiable. When you now increase the fuel, you have compounded the problems for them.

“If we are not careful in this country, we are going to have a situation where people will rise and start to slaughter other people on the streets because of hunger. The hunger is unbearable. Whatever President Buhari can do about, he should please act fast. Let him separate fuel subsidy from what is happening to ordinary man. When a person like me is complaining, what about the ordinary man on the street?” he wondered.

In a related development,  if it does not revert to the old pump price of petrol.

The senator, who participated in the #OcuppyNigeria protests, which forced the government of former president Goodluck Jonathan to shelve the idea of removing fuel subsidy, accused the current administration of going against the campaign promises of the All Progressives Congress.
