Amazon releases new Dash button for developers (AMZN)

Amazon announced that it is launching a new Dash button for developers that is pre-integrated with its Amazon Web Services cloud infrastructure and managed services, Venture Beat reported.

Developers can program the Wi-Fi connected button device to complete a wide variety of tasks such as counting items, tracking them, sending an alert notification, turning something on or off, or ordering something from Amazon. Different actions can be programmed into the device if a user single clicks, double clicks, or holds down the device's button.

The pre-integration with AWS means that developers can code the button's logic in the AWS cloud. Whenever the button is pressed, it will send data directly back to AWS to complete the pre-designated task.

Previous iterations of the Amazon Dash buttons served a completely different purpose — they allowed customers to re-order items from Amazon with the click of a button. The AWS button is the first Dash button aimed at developers.

AWS and other competing cloud providers are soliciting developers to build IoT devices and applications connected to their cloud infrastructures. AWS introduced a suite of IoT-specific software and services last year, and the new AWS Dash button provides an easy for way developers to test out AWS’ IoT suite.
