Top-ranked St. Francis finishes season sweep of Mitty
St. Francis, The Chronicle’s No. 1 squad, had leads of 12-2 and 23-9 after the first two quarters en route to a wire-to-wire, 55-38 Central Coast Section Open Division semifinal win over West Catholic Athletic League rival Mitty on Tuesday at Independence High in San Jose. Noah Stapes had 13 points and Curtis Witt and Logan Johnson added 11 apiece for the Lancers (25-2), who face another WCAL rival, Bellarmine, in the final at Santa Clara University at 8 p.m. Friday. The Wildcats, who got 12 points each from Matt Redmond and David Saadatnezhadi, now face third-seeded Leland-San Jose, a 53-52 winner over second-seed Leigh-San Jose, in Saturday’s final. Defending league playoff champion Mission (24-6) takes on Lowell (18-14) in a 4 p.m. semifinal game Wednesday at Kezar Pavilion, followed by Burton (19-9) against Lincoln (15-13) at 5:30 p.m. The winners meet for the championship Friday at Kezar. In an Open Division semifinal at Milpitas High School, Akayla Hackson made five three-pointers and scored 20 of her game-high 26 points in the first half as No. 2-seed Pinewood (22-4) ran past the third-seeded Irish (16-9), who got 26 points from Iimari’i Thomas. Pinewood, which got 15 from Hannah Jump and a combined 17 from Erin Poindexter-McHan and Chloe Eackles, now plays top-seed Mitty for the title at 6 p.m. Friday at Santa Clara University. Yuriko Castillian broke a 22-22 tie with a bucket just before halftime and Lincoln (24-6) did not trail from there in a 60-49 semifinal win over Lowell at Kezar Pavilion.
