Cal LB Jake Kearney medically retires from football
Linebacker Jake Kearney has left the Cal football team, head coach Sonny Dykes said Tuesday afternoon.
Kearney’s departure comes four weeks after linebacker Michael Barton announced he was transferring to Arizona for his final year of eligibility.
Linebacker Aisea Tongilava, who missed last season with a toe injury, will re-join the fold in 2016.
Dykes said that safety Evan Rambo and cornerback A.J. Greathouse could also take reps at linebacker when spring practice opens Monday.
“With as much single linebacker as we play, and two linebackers at most, we think we certainly have enough depth,” Dykes said.
