Mavericks surf contest having anxious moments
Organizers of the Titans of Mavericks big-wave surf contest got some discouraging news Wednesday morning when the Eddie Aikau contest, scheduled for Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore, was called off.
The two events are connected because the same swell that arrived in Hawaii, in a diminished state, is the one scheduled to be surfed by Mavericks competitors on Friday.
The Waimea Bay event holds to a high standard of 20-foot waves by the Hawaiian scale, effectively measuring 35-40 feet on the face, and “it was like a joke over there today,” said Bay Area meteorologist Mark Sponsler, the Mavericks contest’s primary forecaster.
