Firefighters contain Fish Hoek fire
Evacuated Fish Hoek residents have returned to their homes after a large vegetation fire was brought “under control”.
|||Cape Town – A large vegetation fire in Fish Hoek was “under control”, the City of Cape Town said on Thursday night.
Late on Thursday afternoon, several Fish Hoek residents were evacuated and moved to a community hall. By eight pm, the City’s executive director for safety and security Richard Bosman reported they had returned home as the fire was “well under control”.
Bosman said while firefighters were “damping down some hot spots”, there was no immediate danger to property or lives.
Three choppers had been flying over the area throughout the day on Thursday to water bomb the fire.
City firefighters were assisted by staff from Table Mountain National Parks, Working on Fire, the Navy, disaster management, traffic, metro police and the military.
Meanwhile, a fire at the Fish Hoek railway station was extinguished after one person burnt to death and two train carriages were destroyed.
The unidentified body was found in one of the carriages that caught alight.
