Murder is on the rise in Rio ahead of the Olympics

REUTERS/Bruno Kelly

Atop the chipped blue metal table sat two 9 mm pistols and small plastic packets of cocaine and marijuana. Two young men slouched in white plastic chairs, while a third held a rifle in a corner 10 meters away.

It was midday this week, not far from a main road in Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro's most developed and supposedly "pacified" slum that straddles a mountain and sits right between the main Barra and Copacabana Olympic zones.

A uniformed police officer stood just 150 meters away... Читать дальше...

Rio 2016: Nigeria suffers epic embarrassment against Japan

Nigeria’s Dream Team VI failed to respond as a wrong anthem was played as they filed out for the preliminary pleasantries against Japan, in their opening Group B fixture of the Olympic Games. The tune played supposedly as Nigeria’s anthem was definitely not that of the most populous black nation, as the players looked with awe, […]

Does America Really Need to Spend More on Defense?

Lawrence J. Korb, Eric M. Goepel

Security, America

America can’t buy perfect security.

There is little consensus about the details of President Barack Obama’s fiscal year 2017  defense budget request, and there are few challenges of the underlying assumptions upon which the request is built. Congress, pundits and thought leaders argue over the makeup of the request and question whether the U.S. Department of Defense should fund a strategy of posture or presence, capability or capacity... 'Black-ish' producer: 'I'm so tired of talking about diversity'

Getty Images

The cast and showrunner of "Black-ish" don't think it matters what race their viewers come from.

A reporter sparked some strong comments from the show's panel at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills when he brought up some early controversy over the show's title and asked if they had statistics for how much of their audience is black and white.

"I will be so happy when diversity is not a word," "Black-ish showrunner Kenya Bariss said of the reporter's question. Читать дальше...

Afghanistan Is Finally Standing Up to Pakistan

Adam Gallagher

Security, Asia

Confronting the Taliban’s main sponsor at last.

As the first president of Afghanistan following the toppling of the Taliban, Hamid Karzai’s legacy will always be decidedly mixed. The famously mercurial Karzai masterfully navigated the traditional tribal politics of Afghanistan, but arguably laid the groundwork for much of the corruption and weak governance that plague the Afghan government today. During his tenure, Karzai often made headlines... Читать дальше...

Korea's Cultural Juggernaut is a Soft-Power Strategy Worth Copying

Steven Kim

Politics, Asia

Conquering the world, one K-pop hit at a time.

In seeking to raise its international profile and influence, Taiwan can take lessons from South Korea’s growing soft power. Its soft power has been expanding through the growing appeal and attraction of its popular culture (a.k.a. Korean Wave or Hallyu) worldwide. As a result, the government has vigorously promoted Korean popular culture, taking advantage of its growing popularity to enhance Korea’s international standing and national image... Oil Won't Save Libya

George Ward

Security, Africa

Making oil the solution only creates more problems.

As political opponents of the Democratic presidential nominee often note, crisis has paralyzed Libya since 2011. To be sure, a power vacuum erupted after dictator Muammar el-Qaddafi’s death, opening the door to a political free-for-all, warring militias, and ISIS. Amidst the ensuing conflict, some hang their hopes on Libya’s greatest natural resource: oil. Ten years ago, over 60 percent of Libya’s GDP came from oil revenues. Читать дальше...

Kenya's Counterterrorism Approach is Floundering

Peter Kirechu

Security, Africa

Despite money and training, Kenya’s security forces are still far from professional.

As Kenya inches dangerously close to shutting down the world’s largest refugee camp in Dabaab, the announced closure masks a calculated, yet disastrous parlay of legitimate domestic terrorism concerns for an expedient, yet flawed, solution that is unlikely to resolve the country’s security challenges. But as insecurity evolves into a bargaining currency for the governing elite... Читать дальше...

The Nuclear Deal is a Chance to Change Iran's Behavior

Sima Shine

Security, Middle East

Washington has tools for influencing Tehran’s most anti-Western faction—before the clock runs out.

The anniversary of the nuclear agreement was just another day on the calendar, because no one believed that Iran would violate the agreement even before it had enjoyed the considerable benefits that agreement confers on Iran.

The key question facing Western decisionmakers and the American administration is how to make sure that the years gained by the nuclear agreement... Читать дальше...

Texas professors are arguing that new campus-carry laws would suppress academic freedom

Jon Herskovitz/Reuters

Three University of Texas professors asked a U.S. judge on Thursday to give them the option of barring students from bringing guns into their classroom after the state gave some students that right under a law that went into effect this week.

The professors said academic freedom could be chilled under the so-called campus carry law backed by the state's Republican political leaders that allows concealed handgun license holders 21 and over to bring handguns into classrooms and other university facilities. Читать дальше...
