Kazakhstan to tackle traffic jams differently: Prime Minister issues instructions to akimats
Tengrinews.kz — Kazakhstan’s major cities have been instructed to launch pilot intelligent traffic management systems on the busiest road sections. Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov gave officials two months to identify such areas and launch the pilot projects.
At a government meeting, the Prime Minister noted that rapid urbanization is increasing pressure on transport infrastructure. According to him, the approach to traffic management needs to change.
“In large cities, we need to move from responding to isolated traffic jams to systematic transport management. This directly affects people’s mobility, safety and the quality of the urban environment,” Bektenov stressed.
The Ministry of Transport, together with local akimats, has been instructed to identify the busiest transport sections in major cities within two months and launch pilot intelligent traffic flow management systems there. The most effective solutions are then expected to be rolled out more widely.
Traffic to be monitored in real time
Bektenov also instructed the Ministry of Transport to develop a unified national digital transport system.
It is expected to provide a complete inventory of transport assets, enable real-time traffic management, forecast congestion and identify potential risks in advance.
Kazakhstan Temir Zholy was given a separate instruction to complete the transfer of transportation data to a unified data lake within one month.
Together with the Ministry of Transport, the company must approve a phased digitalization plan, including a mandatory transition to domestically developed transportation management technologies.
