Kazakhstani citizen held on ship in India for 4 months - Ministry of Foreign Affairs sends note

Tengrinews.kz — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has sent a diplomatic note to India following the detention of a vessel with a crew that includes a Kazakh national.
Zhanbolat Usenov, the official spokesperson for the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced the move on his Telegram channel.

"The vessel MT UNITY, with a crew of 23 sailors, including one citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has been detained at the port of Paradip in the Republic of India. The detention is due to the shipowner's financial debt to a local fuel supplier," the post reads.

Kazakh diplomats are taking the necessary steps to ensure the repatriation of the citizen. The situation is being closely monitored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"A diplomatic note has been sent to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs requesting assistance in resolving the situation," Usenov explained.
The spokesperson added that neither the Kazakh citizen nor his family members have contacted the country's diplomatic missions to request assistance.
Media outlets previously reported that a Kazakh national is a crew member of the oil tanker Unity, which has been under arrest in India since May 11. The Cameroon-flagged vessel was detained after completing its unloading due to financial claims against the shipowner. Both companies involved in the dispute are registered in the UAE. The case is being considered by a court in the Indian state of Odisha. There are 23 people on board, and the issue of the sailors’ return home has yet to be resolved.
