Ukrainian weightlifter stripped of bronze for doping

An IOC disciplinary commission stripped Ukrainian weightlifter Yulia Kalina of her 2012 Olympic bronze on Wednesday over a doping offence, ordering her to immediately return the medal.

Additional analysis of blood tests taken from the 27-year-old during the London Games had tested positive for a prohibited substance, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which said Kalina had been disqualified from the 58-kilo category event.

It ordered her to return "the bronze medal, the diploma and the medallist pin" she took home from the 2012 Olympics.

Kalina tested positive for Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, also called Turinabol, the IOC said, and comes as the Olympic body seeks to tame a series of raging doping scandals ahead of the Rio Games next month.

The IOC said the ruling would enter into force "immediately" and ordered the Ukrainian Olympic Committee to "ensure full implementation of this decision."

It also asked weightlifting's governing body the IWF to modify the results accordingly and "to consider any further action within its own competence."

The IOC has been carrying out additional tests of samples taken at the 2008 Beijing and the London 2012 Games using "improved analytical methods, in order to possibly detect prohibited substances that could not be identified by the analysis performed at the time of these editions of the Olympic Games."
