President Tokayev meets with heads of international conventions

Tengrinews.kz — President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a meeting with the heads of international conventions, citing the Akorda press service.

At the meeting of the Head of State with the leaders of several international environmental and climate organizations, ways to implement key environmental initiatives in the Central Asian region were discussed.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev thanked the participants of the meeting for their support of the Regional Environmental Summit and expressed confidence that their extensive experience would contribute to the promotion of practical approaches to solving common problems.

According to him, the country attaches great importance to the contribution of international institutions to ensuring sustainable development and protecting biodiversity.

As the President emphasized, Kazakhstan advocates the introduction of principles of environmental responsibility at the regional and global levels. In the country’s new Constitution, environmental protection is defined as one of the fundamental principles of state policy.

Representatives of the international conventions thanked the Head of State for the high level of organization of the Regional Environmental Summit. They also welcomed the implementation of the “Taza Kazakhstan” program, aimed at fostering environmental awareness among citizens.

In addition, the high-ranking guests expressed support for Kazakhstan’s global initiatives aimed at addressing climate and water issues.

The meeting was attended by UN Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Inger Andersen, Secretary-General of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Ivonne Higuero, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity Astrid Schomaker, and Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions Rolph Payet.
