At 5 a.m. Hurricane Matthew was maintaining 105 mph hour winds about 60 miles from Charleston, its core offshore Hilton Head Island and headed for a temporary landfall near Hunting or Edisto islands.
At 11 p.m. Hurricane Matthew’s winds had fallen back again to 105 mph. The storm was off Georgia, about 115 miles from Charleston.
Forecasters now have high confidence that the core of Hurricane Matthew will track at least 30 miles offshore early Saturday morning, sparing the Lowcountry the worst of it. They are less confident how strong it will be when it gets to Charleston, and what the impacts will be.
