‘Abbott Elementary’ Just Aired the Most Shocking Yet Funniest Scene Ever

Calling all Abbott Elementary fans to the front, as one of the most surprising moments in the show's history just debuted last night, April 15, on ABC. As a stan of the sitcom and its creator Quinta Brunson, I have to admit that I didn’t see the sequence of events coming in Season 5 Episode 20, “Night Out.” (SPOILER ALERT!)

If you’re caught up with the season, then you already know the show writers threw viewers a curveball in the prior episode when Janine (Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) called it quits because they couldn’t decide where to spend their first couple’s vacation and how to get there. Well, in the “Night Out” episode, the two cope with their breakup separately on evenings on the town in Philly, and that made for the aforementioned surprising moment, which was also hilarious. 

Drunk Janine Is a Comedic Force on ‘Abbott Elementary’

After hearing about their breakup, Ava (Janelle James) decided to cheer Janine up by taking her out to a bar on a Thursday night and getting a few drinks. Coincidentally, Jacob (Chris Perfetti) also accompanied Gregory to get a few drinks at the same time. Janine and Gregory both had more liquor than they could handle, and they transformed into different people. However, it was Janine who stole the show. 

As it turns out, a heartbroken and drunk Janine is a standout character, and takes the series to an even higher level of comedy (and that’s a compliment considering Abbott Elementary is arguably already the best comedy on television). Under the influence, Janine traded in her meek and “turn the other cheek” mentality for a persona that is brash and a verbal assassin. She was dishing out shady insults left and right. Check out this moment where she harshly rejected a guy at the bar and frightened off his girlfriend.

Oh, but then came THEE moment. Although said in jest, Ava tried hyping up Janine at the bar, but mentioned Janine was “short.” That’s when Janine did something she had never done in the history of the series. She clapped back at Ava and hilariously eviscerated her. Janine literally left Ava speechless and me in almost tears from laughing. Take a look.
