A South Dakota town of about 900 people located 40 miles southwest of Sioux Falls has become known as a statewide leader in downtown redevelopment. Centerville's success is largely due to a strong vacant building ordinance that encourages property owners to improve or sell their buildings. The initiative has led to a vibrant downtown with new businesses like boutiques, salons, and restaurants. Economic development coordinator Jared Hybertson credits the ordinance for giving property owners a push to revitalize their properties. The effort has made Centerville a destination for visitors and boosted the local economy. Its success is also serving as a model for other communities around the state.
