Prosecutors say greed, arrogance and power were the driving forces behind four men charged in U.S. federal court for the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and separate defense attorneys presented their opening statements Tuesday in Miami federal court. Prosecutors say the case wasn’t complicated: the defendants simply wanted to seize power and get rich. Four men are charged with conspiring in South Florida to kidnap or kill Haiti’s former leader, plus related charges. They face possible life sentences. They all have pleaded not guilty. Defense attorneys argued that the investigation initiated in Haiti was a complete mess and that their clients were manipulated into taking the blame for an internal coup.
