A Chilean court has ordered the pretrial detention of a 39-year-old man for his alleged role in a major wildfire. The fire has been raging across central and southern Chile for nearly a week, leaving at least 21 dead. Authorities arrested the man on Thursday for allegedly starting the Trinitarias fire, the largest of about fifteen uncontrolled wildfires. Prosecutors say the fire began when sparks from a faulty wood-burning stove spread to a nearby forest. The fires have devastated the Bio Bio region, destroying homes and leaving hundreds in shelters. The investigation is ongoing, with more charges expected Monday.
