Government forces have seized a strategic town and oil fields in northeastern Syria. The move on Sunday is part of an ongoing push against Kurdish-led forces east of the Euphrates River. Tensions between Damascus and the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces or SDF flared earlier this month that led to deadly clashes. Syrian troops advanced into Tabqa in Raqqa province on Sunday. It's a critical area because of its dam and military air base. Residents reportedly welcomed the troops. The government and SDF have accused each other of violating a March agreement to reintegrate northeastern Syria. The situation remains tense with further military movements expected.
