A new lawsuit alleges that a deaf man who was killed in Baltimore's jail was forced to share a cell with a first-degree murder suspect whose violent behavior had already alarmed his previous cellmate. Javarick Gantt was strangled to death in 2022. His cellmate, Gordon Staron, later pleaded guilty. Gantt's family says the two men never should have been assigned to the same cell. They say he should have received special accommodations and allege that corrections officers failed to properly monitor the dorm the night of his death. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, which runs the jail, didn’t immediately provide comment Tuesday.
