The North Carolina House has elected a new speaker. Republican Rep. Destin Hall was chosen Wednesday and succeeds five-term Speaker Tim Moore, who is now in Congress. Hall represents a youth movement in the legislature at age 37. Republicans control both the House and Senate in the ninth largest state, but November election results left them one House seat short of a veto-proof majority. That could help new Democratic Gov. Josh Stein in blocking permanently GOP measures that he vetoes. Hall said he believes Democrats will join Republicans on certain issues to override vetoes.. Hurricane Helene relief is expected to be a big issue early in 2025.
