About 7 in 10 U.S. adults say they believe in angels, but what, exactly, is an angel? Typical portrayals in Western art depict them as human-looking, but with wings. They are usually white and often blonde. But some people are rejecting those portrayals for what they call “biblically accurate angels.” These strange creatures take their cues from biblical descriptions of heavenly beings. Some have dozens of eyes and many wings. Others take the form of wheels within wheels. Episcopal priest Kira Austin-Young and her husband made a biblically accurate angel Christmas tree topper, and the photo went a little bit viral. She says that in today's world “having a scary and weird angel sort of speaks to people.”
