Saoirse Ronan appears in virtually every frame of “The Outrun,” and it's hard to imagine this poignant but brutal portrayal of an addiction and recovery journey without her. The actor gives one of her finest performances, writes Associated Press critic Jocelyn Noveck in her review, as a biology student who returns to her childhood home in the Orkney Islands off Scotland to recover from an alcohol addiction that has ruined her life in London. Ronan’s most impressive accomplishment, writes Noveck, is how she delineates the stages of Rona’s journey with such clarity and precision — even down to the movement of different stages of drunkenness. In theaters Friday.
