A former police bodyguard for New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is scheduled to make his first court appearance on federal criminal charges. Jeffrey Vappie is charged with wire fraud and making false statements about an alleged romantic relationship with the mayor. Vappie, who retired from the New Orleans Police Department in June, was indicted July 22. His lawyers have declared his innocence. His arraignment was set for Wednesday afternoon. Cantrell has not been charged and has not commented on Vappie's indictment. The Democrat is serving her second term as mayor.
