The United States Department of Defense has announced that the construction work on a floating pier for humanitarian aid to Gaza has been completed, but the date of its deployment to a usable location has not yet been determined.
Voice of America reported on Tuesday, May 7th, citing the US Department of Defense, that the construction work on both sections of this floating pier for sending humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza has been completed, but its relocation under current conditions is uncertain.
Work on this pier began in April after the possibility of delivering aid to the people of Gaza had been severely restricted, even rendered impossible, due to Israel’s blockades and military incursions into the Gaza Strip.
The US Department of Defense had announced at the time that it was attempting to open a maritime passageway, and this pier, constructed in two sections for this purpose, has incurred a cost of at least $320 million according to previous estimates.
Voice of America, citing Pentagon Deputy Spokesperson Sabrina Singh, reported that the reconstruction work on this floating pier, consisting of two sections, has been completed and is awaiting final decisions to be transferred to its primary destination.
This comes as the need for humanitarian aid to more than 2 million people in Gaza has significantly increased, and the Rafah crossing, the only land route that was previously limitedly open for humanitarian aid, was seized yesterday by Israeli forces.
