THE BBC has shared a first look at the upcoming new series of Call the Midwife as filming begins.
It has been confirmed on official Call the Midwife Facebook page that filming has begun thanks to a behind-the-scenes snap from an upcoming episode. The picture was posted alongside an emotional message to fans from the show’s writer and executive producer Heidi Thomas, which reveals exciting new details about the future of the BBC series.
A behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Call the Midwife posted on social media confirms production on new episodes of the BBC show is underway.
The picture is of actors Stephen McGann and Laura Main who play married couple Dr Patrick Turner and nurse Shelagh Turner alongside April Rae Hoang and Alice Brown, who play their on-screen daughters May and Angela.
The Call the Midwife family is holding the show’s clapperboard as production on a new Christmas special has begun.
A length caption accompanied the picture. It read: “NEWS!! Call the Midwife begins filming for the new Christmas special and series 14.
“It’s happening!! We’ve just received the iconic clapperboard shot hot from the set of Call the Midwife, where our intrepid team have begun the first day’s filming for the new Christmas special and the FOURTEENTH series!!”
“And what better way to open up the new season than with the Turners Shelagh (Laura Main), Patrick (Stephen McGann), and their children May (April Rae Hoang) and Angela (Alice Brown) in the cosy festive Turner home?
“We begin our filming season in Christmas 1969, before we move on to the new year, and our new series 14 episodes. This yuletide marks a poignant turning point – as it’s the last time we’ll be filming in the swinging sixties! Next stop: the supersonic seventies!!!”
The post also included a message from the show’s writer and executive producer Heidi Thomas.
She said: “After all these years, I still get butterflies every time I see the first clapperboard picture from the set. Series 14 is set in 1970, launching us into an exciting new decade. We can’t wait to bring you another season full of touching, exciting, emotional stories from Nonnatus House.”
The post concluded: “And BOY, do we have some stories for you! We cannot WAIT to show you what’s coming….
“Call the Midwife returns with a brand new Christmas special, and series 14 in 2025.”
The new episodes Call the Midwife will take viewers back to the exciting London suburb of Poplar while bringing fresh new stories to the screen to mark the start of a new decade in the series.
Alongside the Turners, returning cast members include Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne, Linda Bassett as Nurse Phyllis Crane, Rebecca Gethings as Sister Veronica, Georgie Glen as Miss Higgins, Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan, Leonie Elliott as Nurse Lucille, Megan Cusack as Nurse Nancy and Zephryn Taitte as Cyril Robinson.
Helen George also confirmed her return to the series, despite the fact Trixie’s future in Poplar was left uncertain at the end of series 13 as she made the decision to join her husband, Matthew Alyward, in New York.
Although fans now have to wait several months before the Christmas special airs, and even longer for series 14, they were thrilled to see that filming had begun.
Many fans flooded the comments of the post with messages of excitement.

“This is favourite programme, watched every single episode since it started,” praised another.
“Can’t wait for the new series and the Christmas special on Christmas Day, always one of my highlights on Christmas Day,” a third commented.
A fourth viewer gushed: “Brilliant, Christmas Day wouldn’t be right without a Call the Midwife episode. The best, loveliest, most well written TV programme ever.”
