MAKING your space feel bigger doesn’t have to require extensive DIY projects or renovations.
An interior design pro has shared the best way to give the illusion of a larger home.
Aino Heinäsuo, head of design at Redecor, revealed the hacks she swears by to make the most of smaller rooms.
According to the interior expert, people often make the same mistake when laying out a small space.
“I’ve noticed some people tend to choose oversized furniture, which can be a significant mistake,” she said.
Heinäsuo explained that “it’s important to carefully measure the space before making any purchase decisions.”
She pointed out that oversized furniture can make your space look even smaller.
“Conversely, using a rug that’s too small can also make rooms feel smaller,” she added.
Measuring out your layout is a necessity, according to the experts at Apartment Therapy.
“Scale is key when working in a small space,” they explained to their readers.
“Having a bulky dining table that seats six won’t work, but by the same token, a couple of mismatched foldout chairs aren’t going to suffice when you have guests over.”
They recommended finding the right balance when designing your space.
“Make sure your furniture fits the room, measure carefully, and purchase pieces that work for your needs,” the pros advised.
“Don’t buy bulky items like a big couch just to take up space, but do have enough surfaces for people to sit comfortably.”
Heinäsuo also highlighted the importance of including natural light in your space.
“The lack of natural light together with dark furniture or walls often creates the illusion of a smaller space,” she said.
The interior pros at Apartment Therapy explained why this illusion takes place.
“Usually, stuffiness and darkness are correlated,” the design experts explained.
“Dark paneling and drab decor make a space look more cramped.”
They suggested dressing up darker furniture with light pillows and blankets.
You can also use light-colored rugs and paint to brighten up your space.
“Make sure there’s a theme and complementary palette so that the eye doesn’t have to process a ton at once,” they warned.
As the weather continues to get warmer, Heinäsuo revealed the best way to elevate a smaller balcony or patio.
“If there’s enough space for a taller sofa, you can maximize the functionality of the area by incorporating a small dining table nearby,” she said.
The interior pro pointed out that converting your outdoor space into a functional area will help you maximize it during the summer months.
“This setup not only provides a comfortable spot for lounging but also offers a convenient space for dining,” she explained.
Heinäsuo also expanded on the light color palette she recommends incorporating into smaller spaces.
“Choosing lighter colors to make the space look larger doesn’t limit you to just white,” she explained.
“Consider lighter shades of greens, yellows, blues, or even pinks for a fresh and airy feel.”
