A CAR expert has urged drivers to pick up three brilliantly cheap motors that he believes will rise in value very soon.
Used car guru Jonny Brighton, of the popular motoring YouTube channel CarsWithJB, picked out three incredibly affordable whips that pack plenty of punch – including a very iconic model by Subaru.
For fans of fast Fords, Jonny pointed to the Ford Focus RS – a sporty iteration of the popular hatchback that could be sold for a profit within a few years.
In fact, in recent years, a number of a souped up models from the famous brand have gained a cult following, and in turn have become sought-after classics from car collectors.
That includes the Capri, Cosworth and Escort.
Jonny said: “Classic fast Fords, particularly ones that are more attainable for your everyday person end up being pretty pricey later on in life, once the people who lusted after them when they were younger start buying the best ones when they are older.”
“In 2023, a Sierra Cosworth RS500 sold for almost £600,000 at auction, which is a testament to this.
“Look at the price of Escort Cosworths and the old Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts, they are all the same story.”
Boasting an impressive body kit and large rear spoiler, the Focus RS – which Jonny says can be picked up “for around £15,000” can reach an eye-watering top speed of 163 mph, while hitting 0 to 60 mph in under six seconds.
From one cult classic to another, Jonny also suggests looking out for the Subaru Impreza – which is going up in value as it gets older and rarer.
The wildly loved Japanese saloon, made famous by legendary rally drivers Colin McRae and Richard Burns, was once the champion motor for affordable thrills.
But now, at the bottom end, Impreza’s can be picked up for around £14,000, while better condition models have risen to over £30,000.
Jonny added: “The earlier models were found with the two-litre turbocharged boxer-four engine that produces 261bhp, taking it to 60mph in 5.3 seconds… and the exhaust note is one of the most iconic in the entire automotive world.”
And finally, the used car expert picked the BMW M5 – built between 2003 and 2010 – with its engine the cause for its increase in value.
Jonny said: “When I started making YouTube videos a bit over five years ago, you could very easily get yourself into a BMW E60 M5 for well under £10,000.
“They had reached the bottom of their depreciation curve and people just weren’t that interested in them, especially when the newer M5s were more modern-looking, faster, more capable, more comfortable and more usable.
“But I never really understood this – the E60 M5 has one of the most ludicrous engines in the history of the BMW brand with an incredibly iconic sound.
“How could it be overlooked as a cheap, depreciating saloon that nobody cares about?”
Expect to be asked these questions by car salespeople while trying to purchase a car, and be wary of how you answer.
Jonny added that the cheapest he could find a decent M5 model was for around £15,000, with better quality versions rising to £40,000 – that “shows their true collector value.”
This comes as another car expert suggested a BMW convertible as a sound investment – suggesting buyers check out the 318Ci Cabriolet.
