Met Office gives verdict on ‘600-mile ice bomb’ predicted to hit UK

The Met Office has weighed in on whether a huge amount of snow forecast for the UK later this month will actually hit or not.

Forecaster WXCharts predicts we’ll see a huge dumping of snow on March 21, which will bring freezing temperatures, rain and high winds as well as plenty of the white stuff.

It predicts temperatures in the south west of England could get especially frosty, with lows of -10°C predicted in some areas.

It’s highly unusual for snow to fall so far south during that time of year – but for anyone hoping for a snow forecast, we wouldn’t advise you get your hopes up.

The Met Office makes it clear it can only accurately forecast snow a few days in advance – and currently they see no signs of snowfall in their long-range forecast.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast for March 13 until March 22 reads: ‘Around the middle of next week, conditions are expected to once again turn unsettled across western areas with outbreaks of rain and perhaps some strong winds, particularly in the north west.

‘Elsewhere, mostly dry at first with some sunshine.

‘By the end of next week, conditions are likely to become more widely unsettled with rain and showers for all regions at times, although the wettest weather is likely to the in the south and west, with some drier and brighter spells still likely in the north and east.

‘Showers could be heavy at times in the south, with a risk of thunderstorms here.

‘Temperatures will be near or slightly above normal, although there is risk of some colder interludes, with overnight frost, across northern and eastern areas.’
