Sports scientist Dr Rajpal Brar has explained that Ryan Sessegnon’s hamstring surgery should reduce the chances of the injury reoccurring again and insisted that the latest setback is far from a career-threatening one for the Tottenham man.
Sessegnon’s career has been blighted by a series of injuries, which has prevented the left-back from fulfilling his potential since his switch to Tottenham in 2019.
The 23-year-old suffered a hamstring injury on his left leg at the start of pre-season, which meant that he was unable to impress manager Ange Postecoglou and the rest of the Tottenham coaching staff following their appointment.
Just when he finally thought he had a chance to do so after recovering from the injury, disaster struck for the former Fulham man, who suffered the same injury a couple of weeks ago, this time on his right leg.
Last week, Alasdair Gold took to social media to explain that the injury was not as bad as initially feared and that the chances of it reoccurring are quite slim, now that the former Fulham has had the same operation on his right leg as he did on his other leg last summer.
Brar has now echoed a similar sentiment, backing Sessegnon to be fit in time for the start of pre-season.
He told PA (as relayed by Bracknell News): “You look at elite footballers, the most common injured muscle is the hamstring and (surgery) is just one of those things where you try to reduce the risk.
“Surgery is never a guarantee of no re-injury but it is one of those things where you think it might give them a better chance of reducing the re-injury risk.
“Once you have surgery, you are looking at a 10 to 12-plus weeks timeline depending on all the specifics. The hope is that he can come back for pre-season, get some matches to rebuild that match fitness and match rhythm, then go from there to try to have him ready for the start of next season.”
Brar pointed out that since Sessegnon has age on his side, he should not have any issues in building back the strength on his hamstring methodically and making a full recovery.
He added: “He still has plenty of time right? It is just one of those things with injury cycles or muscular injuries where it can be really tough to get out of, even for more developed players.
“There has certainly been cases where other players have got into it (injury cycles) and got out of it. It is not by any means a death knell for his career or anything.
“He has plenty of time and the key will be some methodical rehab, then some good fortune so you have to hope for the best.
“He has more time to build back and there is also not as much pressure to get back than say a 29- or 30-year-old who is angling to get back to play and get a new contract or whatever it is, whereas it is different for a younger player.”

One would hope for Sessegnon’s sake that this surgery puts a permanent end to his hamstring problems and that the youngster goes on to fulfil his potential at the top level.
However, it now looks certain that he has already played his last game for Tottenham, with the left-back entering the final year of his deal in June, which means that the club will have to cash in on him in the summer.
