Former Burnley midfielder Keith Treacy has claimed that Destiny Udogie often gets away with the kind of straight-legged challenges for which Dominic Calvert-Lewin was sent off on Thursday.
Udogie has impressed one and all with the way he has taken to the Premier League and the inverted full-back role in Ange Postecoglou’s system.
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville believe that the Italian has been the best left-back on show in the Premier League this season, with both pundits naming him in their team of the season so far (Sky Sports Monday Night Football).
Perhaps the only area where the youngster has to improve is his discipline, with the Tottenham full-back having been sent off once this season while also having served a suspension for picking up five yellow cards.
VAR has once again come under the spotlight after Calvert-Lewin was sent off in Everton’s FA Cup clash against Palace on Thursday after what looked a fairly innocuous challenge.
While discussing the Toffees star’s tackle, Treacy claimed that Udogie has got away with similar challenges on several occasions this season.
The pundit told Off The Ball about Calvert-Lewin’s sending off: “I didn’t think it was a dangerous one, you could say it was straight-legged, but he didn’t go in with any force to try and do him.
“Even if he goes in straight on the shin it’s not a leg-breaker, when you hear that they’ve gone in straight-legged you think it’s a leg-breaker, I’ve seen Udogie do it at Spurs a few times and he gets away with it.”

Udogie certainly does not shy away from challenges and while one can argue that the 21-year-old can be reckless at times, he is certainly not a dirty player, who purposely tries to hurt his opponents. The Italy international’s discipline will improve as he matures as a football.
