The Fox News network – and many Donald Trump supporters – have spent hours since Tuesday's ousting of Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) fantasizing about the former president taking over the role.
It seems Trump is doing the same. On Wednesday, he shared an image of himself holding the gavel from the Speaker's chair.
Outside the Manhattan courthouse where he's on trial for fraud, Trump on Wednesday told the press that he’s been in talks with Republicans about being appointed to the role. The Republican Party hasn't said publicly whether it's spoken with him, though several on the right say they're on board, however.
Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) posted online that he's all-in for Trump. "President Trump, the greatest President of my lifetime, has a proven record of putting America First and will make the House great again,"
Texas Rep. Troy Nehls (R) said in a statement Tuesday afternoon, according to Fox. He said, when the House reconvenes, his first act "will be to nominate Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives."
To appoint Trump, Republicans would have to choose somebody else, hold a vote to change the rules, have the stand-in speaker resign, and then appoint Trump. When Republicans crafted their rules which currently stand, they made a mandate that any Speaker under indictment must step aside.
