Tennessee Bill Would Ban Local Governments From Funding Abortions

Tennessee state Rep. Debra Moody, R-Covington, filed a bill this week to prohibit local governments from supporting the killing of unborn babies with taxpayers’ money, just a few months after the Nashville City Council voted to give half a million dollars to Planned Parenthood.

In October, Nashville city leaders cut funding from police and other health programs to create the new grant for the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood, ignoring concerns about job cuts and tax dollars being used to support abortions.

Moody did not say if the city council’s action prompted her to introduce the bill, but it could be one reason, the Nashville Tennessean reports.

Her legislation, state House Bill 90, would prohibit local governments from using tax dollars to help employees go out of state for elective abortions, including travel expenses and health insurance coverage.

“This prohibition includes expending funds as part of a health benefit plan or for travel to a state where abortion is legal,” the bill summary states.

Tennessee is one of 14 states that protects unborn babies by banning abortions now that Roe v. Wade is gone. As the new year begins and state legislatures reconvene, many states are considering bills to add protections for unborn babies and help families in need to choose life.

For example, Texas state Rep. Candy Noble, R-Lucas, filed a very similar bill to Moody’s that would ban local governments in Texas from providing logistical support to aid pregnant mothers in traveling out of state to abort their unborn babies in elective abortions.

Although Roe v. Wade is gone, Stacy Dunn, president of Tennessee Right to Life, said pro-lifers still have a lot of work to do. In an interview last fall, Dunn said they hope to pass more legislation this year to protect babies in the womb and support families in need through the nearly 200 pregnancy resource centers and other charities across Tennessee.

“And we will continue to educate the citizens of our state about the precious gift of life in all its ages, stages and conditions,” she said. “Our goal is not only to make abortion illegal but to make it unthinkable.”

Currently, 14 states are enforcing pro-life laws that ban or strictly limit abortions, and others are fighting in court to do the same. Researchers estimate these laws have saved about 10,000 unborn babies’ lives since June.
