A 45-year-old man of no fixed abode and a 42-year-old woman from Wisbech have been arrested today, police confirmed.

Authorities believe Eliza died some time between 10pm on Monday and 6am on the day she was found.

Next door neighbour Maurice Burton claimed that he heard a third midnight on Monday.

He said: “It sounded like someone fell over. I heard a voice saying, ‘you’ve let the *** dog out.’  I never heard any more after that.”

Eliza was known to live alone except for her two rescue dogs.

She used a mobility scooter and a walking stick and would often be visited by nurses and her adult son.

Another neighbour, Stacy Pearson, said: “She was quite poorly but had a lot of visitors of all kinds here.

“We heard a man shout and dogs barking but then nothing after that.”

Muriel Gray, who lives in the house across the road and knew Eliza, added: “She looked very frail and older than she was.

“We hadn’t heard the two dogs barking that night but we would usually hear them.”

Search teams combed the area around the house using sniffer dogs and magnets placed down street drains as they sought any indication of what had taken place.

A post-mortem will be carried out tomorrow to determine Eliza’s cause of death.

Cops are expected to formally confirm the deceased woman’s identity when the examination is completed.

The family are yet to release a statement, but an update from Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed the arrests.

Detective Inspector Lee Martin said: “I understand this is likely to be concerning to local people but we do believe it to be an isolated incident and we have extra patrols in the area today who are there for people to speak to if they wish.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the force online or on 101 and quote Operation Aerospace.

Those who wish to report information anonymously can contact independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
