‘It changes everything’ – Heung-min Son reacts to hat-trick against Leicester
Heung-min Son ended his goal drought in style with a 13 minute hat-trick to seal a 6-2 win for Tottenham Hotspur at home to struggling Leicester City.
The South Korean attacker spoke after the game about his pride in helping his team to a big win in North London.
Last season’s joint Golden Boot winner has endured a stuttering start to this campaign, with just one goal contribution to his name before tonight – an assist in the opening fixture against Southampton.
Spurs boss Antonio Conte had kept the faith in his attacker throughout the rough patch. Son had started every game so far this season, but Conte finally took the decision to drop him to the bench for the visit of Leicester City.
That decision proved to be the right one, with Son coming off the bench after 59 minutes and stealing the show with a stunning hat-trick. It took Son just 14 minutes to make an impact, and a further 13 minutes to complete the hat-trick.
Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Son described the ‘amazing feeling’ of finally putting an end to his ‘frustration’ of recent games.
“Amazing feeling. Especially because the game was not finished. I came on at 3-2. It was a tough game. To win in that way is incredible,” Son said.
“I couldn’t believe it [when he scored]. All the frustration and what I had, disappointment and negative feeling just went. I couldn’t move so I stood still. It made me really happy,” he added.
“Football is crazy sometimes. Sometimes the ball didn’t want to go inside and three times [it did today]. It changes everything. I learned so much in this tough period. I need to work hard every time to get the chance,” Son continued.
Forever humble, Son described his goalscoring feat as “three lucky goals” but insisted he was “really proud” of the achievement.

What a night for Heung-min Son. He’s the kind of player who is affected by his mentality more than most, so for him to be dropped to the bench was probably just the incentive he needed to come on and make a difference.
He looked extra hungry to put an end to the barren spell in front of goal and you can see how much it meant to him. Now that he’s got that confidence boost, you’d imagine there will be plenty more nights like this to come for Son and Spurs.
