CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A blast of winter weather has pushed back the opening of schools in the Reno area and many state offices in eight northern Nevada counties.
Washoe County school administrators announced a two-hour delay for classes, and Gov. Steve Sisolak issued an order resetting state office start times to 10 a.m. in Carson, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey and Washoe counties.
The governor's order did not change start times for essential public safety and corrections personnel.
The Nevada Department of Transportation and state police were reporting icy roads and dangerous driving conditions.
Chains were required on Interstate 80 and U.S. and state highways in the Sierra Nevada for all vehicles that don't have four-wheel drive and snow tires.
Wintry driving conditions also were reported in northeastern Nevada, with chains or snow tires required for vehicles in mountain passes.
The Elko Daily Free Press said crashes were reported Tuesday on I-80 east of Elko and west of Winnemucca.
The National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories throughout the state, with forecasts calling for temperatures below freezing and several inches of snow in the north.
Chilly temperatures and cold gusty winds were expected in southern Nevada and the Las Vegas area, with a chance of rain and snow possible in mountain areas.
