The National Book Foundation announced its five 2021 finalists in each genre in early October (you'll find them below). On November 17, judges met to hash out the year's winners and announced the best books of the year in each category. Finalists earn $1,000 and winners receive $10,000.
The 2021 National Book Award winners:
Fiction: "Hell of a Book" by Jason Mott, available on Amazon and Bookshop
Nonfiction: "All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley's Sack, a Black Family Keepsake" by Tiya Miles, available on Amazon and Bookshop
Poetry: "Floaters" by Martín Espada, available at Amazon and Bookshop
Young People's Literature: "Last Night at the Telegraph Club" by Malinda Lo, available on Amazon and Bookshop
Translated Works:"Winter in Sokcho" by Elisa Shua Dusapin and translated from French by Aneesa Abbas Higgins, available on Amazon and Bookshop
The competition was fierce and dynamic: One notable name on this year's longlist that was absent from the shortlist was Richard Powers, whose novel "Bewilderment" was a finalist in the running for the Booker Prize (announced November 3) and whose earlier work "The Overstory" won the Pulitzer Prize in 2019.
