Google's Tensor includes on-device AI for speech recognition and live translation, while enhancing photos and videos with features like Magic Eraser.
The Pixel 6 uses a new Tensor chip, and being a processor of Google's own design, it has plenty of artificial intelligence enhancements built right into the silicon. Google is best known for its search engine, the world's most popular because of its incredible ability to understand natural language. Much of that power makes its way into Google Assistant, which most recognize as the smartest virtual assistant on the planet. That degree of expertise and focus is represented in the Tensor chip that's found only in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
Google researches AI at every scale from the smallest to the most massive. Deep Mind is the Google AI that mastered chess, shogi, and even go, one of the most difficult games in the world, surpassing the best human players. Google is using its AI and machine learning power to analyze massive amounts of health data and scan weather pattern history to make better predictions to help people stay ahead of problems. On a smaller scale, Google's AI powers the Assistant used in smartphones, smart speakers, and smartwatches to answer everyday questions and control smart home accessories.
In the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, Google's Tensor chip accelerates and expands this potential, bringing on-device AI for faster actions that don't rely upon Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity for speech recognition. This helps extend battery life, averaging 34 hours on a single charge according to Google. AI works throughout the system to optimize and improve everything. Voice typing sees big improvements with Pixel 6, gaining the ability to mix commands in with dictation. For example, when using voice typing in a messaging app, simply pausing, then saying 'Clear,' erases the last sentence, while 'Send' sends the message. Emojis can be inserted by saying 'laughing emoji' or 'heart emoji,' making hands-free voice typing a viable choice now instead of having to go back to fingers for corrections or to complete the message.
Google's Tensor AI prowess extends to more than just language recognition. The Pixel 6 has an advanced speech enhancement capability that can isolate the user's voice even in very noisy environments when recording a selfie video. This relies on the Tensor processor's language recognition skill to separate voice from ambient noise and raise the content while reducing background distractions. The Tensor's machine learning power has a role in photo and video processing as well. The new Magic Eraser, Face Unblur, and 20 times Super Res Zoom all make use of the Tensor's image processing power that is backed by AI and ML models.
Google Lens will benefit from the Tensor's on-device AI identifying objects and people in images faster than ever, while also recognizing text and even foreign languages in the camera view and rendering the translation over the live image. Messages can also be translated with various chat apps with a tap of a button and videos support live translation as well. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are the first all-Google phones, powered by the Tensor chip and filled with Google's AI expertise making this one of the smartest smartphones ever made.
