How much money would it take for you to eat your phone? An eastern European man somehow managed to eat his Nokia 3310, and no payment was required.
A Kosovan man somehow managed to eat his entire Nokia 3310 phone and needed surgery to get it removed. There are no stats online about how many phones are ingested worldwide, surprisingly. However, according to some Reddit sleuths, eating your phone could be quite slimming, as they're only roughly 10 calories (depending on the make and model, of course). The only problem is even with all the best seasoning in the world and expert chefs on board, a mobile device is still entirely inedible. For one, the battery acid is completely toxic. Secondly, plastic, glass, and metal are totally inedible. Thirdly, any electric charge in that phone will leave you a bitter aftertaste. Finally, it doesn't pair very well with wine, so don't risk your dinner function with sauteéd Galaxy Flips.
The phone in question is the twenty-one-year-old Nokia 3310, one of the world's most popular pre-smartphone mobiles. Known for being unbreakable, it really does live up to the moniker. If you strike the phone with a hammer it won't break, it can fall 600 meters and the only thing that would break is the pavement it hits. Okay, maybe that's a bit much, but seriously, these things are ridiculously durable. The phone's reputation is so well known that it started a YouTube trend of people using the likes of firearms, hydraulic presses, and other means to attempt to destroy them. The phones were also famous for the built-in game Snake, a title fondly remembered by all who used the phone.
A Facebook post by the user Skender Telaku shows the team of doctors that removed the phone, led by Telaku himself. Dr. Telaku managed to remove the foreign object without cutting into the stomach by taking it out in three pieces with endoscopy. Endoscopy is a process in which a small tube-like camera is inserted into the patient through the mouth to show one's insides on a larger screen, assisting in any medical procedures that are currently underway. Considering the phone was sitting in the stomach for four days it's a miracle the patient is alive, didn't need surgery, and doesn't have any lasting damage.
The Facebook post also includes images of the phone itself after marinating in the stomach acid for some time. The exterior of the phone appears to be mostly undamaged besides the lack of a screen and stomach residue along the crevices. It's hard to tell how damaged the lithium-ion battery is from the image, however one would probably suggest replacing that, if not the whole phone in the very near future.
It appears that alongside its previous accolades, people can now add acid to the Nokia 3310's list of invulnerability. No information was given about the context for eating the phone nor any additional details about the male who went in to have it removed. In any case, it appears he's going to need a new phone.
